Summer is a season of adventure—but for families of children with special needs, finding the right places to go can feel tricky. You’re not just looking for something fun—you want inclusive, sensory-friendly spaces where your child can truly enjoy being themselves.
The good news? Connecticut offers a growing list of activities, programs, and destinations that welcome all children with open arms, including those with autism and sensory sensitivities.
Here’s a list of 10 sensory-friendly activities and destinations to check out this summer across Connecticut:
1. Connecticut Science Center (Hartford)
Sensory Sundays are a must. The lights are dimmed, sounds are softened, and the environment is adapted to support sensory needs. There are also quiet rooms available if your child needs a break. Bonus: many of the exhibits are hands-on and fun for all ages!
2. Mystic Aquarium (Mystic)
This family favorite is more than just an aquarium—it’s an experience. They offer sensory-friendly mornings with reduced noise and crowds. Your child can enjoy watching sea lions, beluga whales, and hands-on touch tanks at their own pace.
3. Kidcity Children’s Museum (Middletown)
This playful museum is designed for children ages 1–7 and includes themed rooms for imaginative play. They offer sensory-sensitive hours, and staff are trained to be supportive and accommodating.
4. Sky Zone Trampoline Park – Sensory Hours (Various Locations)
Sky Zone offers dedicated Sensory Hours at many of its Connecticut locations. During these times, the music is low, and the environment is designed to be calm and inclusive. It’s a great way for kids to move their bodies and have fun without being overstimulated.
5. Boundless Playground at Wolfe Park (Monroe)
This all-abilities playground is a true gem. It’s fully inclusive and built with children of all needs in mind. There’s plenty of shade, space, and adaptive equipment so every child can play, explore, and interact.
6. Beardsley Zoo (Bridgeport)
Connecticut’s only zoo offers sensory-friendly days throughout the year. Check their calendar for events like “Quiet Mornings,” where your child can enjoy the zoo before it gets crowded.
7. Riverfront Adventure Trails (East Hartford to Hartford)
Nature can be healing—and walking, biking, or simply exploring these gentle riverside trails can be a great sensory break. Bring noise-canceling headphones or fidget tools if needed. It’s peaceful, scenic, and wide open for freedom of movement.
8. Sensory-Friendly Movies at AMC Theatres (Multiple Locations)
AMC Theatres offers monthly Sensory Friendly Films, where the lights are turned up and the sound is turned down. Kids can move around, make noise, and enjoy the movie in their own way. It’s a judgment-free zone.
9. Camp Horizons (South Windham)
If you’re looking for a longer experience, Camp Horizons is a summer camp designed specifically for individuals with developmental disabilities. It offers structured activities, support, and a traditional camp experience in a safe, loving environment.
10. The Exceptional Side of Lake Compounce (Bristol)
This popular amusement park offers a Sensory Sensitivity Guide and quiet areas throughout the park. Plus, they provide a Ride Accessibility Program to make sure every child can participate as fully as possible. They’ve made big strides in making fun more inclusive.
You shouldn’t have to miss out on making summer memories just because your child processes the world a little differently. Connecticut is full of destinations and businesses that get it—and are taking real steps to be more welcoming to all children, including those with autism and other special needs. Before heading out, it’s a good idea to call ahead or check websites for the latest sensory-friendly schedules or accommodations. And always pack your essentials: headphones, snacks, visuals, or any comfort tools your child may need. Summer is for every child—yours included.
