Occupational Therapy

Sallyz Center For Autism is Now Offering OT Services

What is Occupational Therapy?

Occupational Therapy(OT) is a health service that focuses on long-term health, well being, and participation in activities that are most important to our patient’s everyday lives. We take a holistic and unique approach to care that is backed by scientific research. OT’s can be found in hospitals, school settings, nursing facilities, home care, and outpatient based clinics like Sallyz.

How Can OT Services Help My Child?

An occupational therapist can work with a variety of diagnoses and in many areas of difficulty
that impact functional participation. Some of these include:

  • Childhood disorders causing developmental delays including Autism Spectrum Disorder, Attention Deficit Disorders, Down Syndrome, Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, etc.
  • Feeding and Eating difficulties (including behavioral, sensory, self-feeding, oral motor, picky-eating)
  • Sensory Integration difficulties
  • Birth deformities or Motor Disorders that cause delays in gross motor milestones (crawling, walking) and fine motor milestones (self-feeding, play skills, handwriting)
  • Orthotic, brace, and other adaptive equipment management
  • Self-care skill difficulties (dressing, toileting, bathing difficulties)
  • Executive Functioning and Behavioral difficulties (self-regulation strategies, understanding emotions, managing impulsivity)
  • Visual Motor Coordination and Visual Perceptual skills

What is the OT Process?

Evaluation
Our evaluations are tailored to each individual child. We encourage and enjoy caregiver participation during the process. An initial evaluation will include a detailed look at the child’s birth, medical, and developmental history, standardized assessments chosen based on individual concerns, and skilled observation of play. Evaluation results are used to determine long and short term goals, and guide treatment activities.

Treatment
Treatment is guided by the goals developed from your child’s evaluation. Treatment is individualized, child driven, and often play based – because play is a child’s full time job! An occupational therapist is able to find ways to help children develop or strengthen skills needed for everyday function while using activities that the child finds meaningful and most of all fun. Treatment time and duration are determined by your child’s OT based on their goals and concerns.
